Static Stack - VHS Memory Game 2.0
# Static Stack - VHS Memory Game ๐ผ
## Devlog #1: Bringing Back the Nostalgia
*December 15, 2025*
---
Hey everyone! Today I'm excited to share the progress on **Static Stack**, a puzzle game that combines classic falling-block mechanics with authentic VHS aesthetics from the golden age of home video.
## The Concept ๐ฌ
Remember those lazy Sunday afternoons recording your favorite shows onto VHS tapes? The satisfying *clunk* of the tape deck, the hiss of magnetic tape, that distinctive tracking static? Static Stack captures that feeling in a match-3 puzzle game where you stack and match VHS tapes to clear lines and keep your "signal" strong.
## What Makes It Unique
### Authentic VHS Aesthetic
Every visual element screams 1990s home video:
- **CRT scanlines and noise** - Real-time animated scan lines and static
- **Blinking "REC" indicator** - Just like your old VCR, complete with timestamp counter
- **VCR-styled UI** - Pause menu looks like an actual VCR control panel with physical buttons
- **Tracking distortion effects** - Random visual glitches that feel authentically analog
- **Neon glow effects** - That premium retro-tech look
### The "Signal Strength" Mechanic
Instead of traditional game-over conditions, your "signal" degrades over time. Stack too high or play too slow, and you'll lose the signal entirely. It creates a unique pressure that feels thematic - like trying to get your recording just right before the tape runs out!
### Memory Types
Each tape represents a different type of VHS memory:
- ๐ฆ **Family** - Those precious home recordings
- ๐บ **Commercial** - Remember recording over commercials?
- ๐ก **Lost Broadcast** - Mysterious found footage vibes
- ๐จ **Cartoon** - Saturday morning classics
- ๐ต **Music Video** - MTV when it actually played music
- ๐ฐ **News** - "We interrupt this program..."
- ๐ **Home Recording** - Birthday parties and holidays
## Recent Updates
### Premium UI Overhaul
The entire UI got a major upgrade:
- **Glass-morphism panels** with subtle transparency
- **3D beveled VCR buttons** that look tactile and pressable
- **LED-style score display** like an old VCR counter
- **Animated tape reels** in the NEXT and HOLD preview areas
### Pause Menu Redesign
The pause menu now looks like an actual VCR control panel:
- Vertical button layout for easy thumb access
- RESUME, RESTART, MAIN MENU, SETTINGS
- Blinking LED indicator and score display
- Decorative "INSERT TAPE" cassette slot
### Performance Optimizations
Under the hood, we've done significant work to ensure smooth 60fps gameplay:
- **Object pooling** for particle effects (150-particle pool)
- **Cached BlurMaskFilters** for glow effects
- **Pre-generated random values** to reduce allocation overhead
- **Score string caching** to minimize garbage collection
### New Feature: REC Indicator
Added the finishing touch - a classic VHS recording indicator:
- Blinking red dot with glow effect
- "REC" text that pulses in sync
- Real-time timestamp (HH:MM:SS) showing your play session
- "SP" (Standard Play) mode indicator
## What's Next?
- More glitch tape types with special abilities
- Additional colorblind accessibility modes
- Sound design polish (tape hiss, button clicks, signal warnings)
## Technical Notes
Built with:
- **Kotlin** for Android
- **Custom Canvas rendering** - No game engine, pure Android graphics
- **Hardware-accelerated** blur and glow effects
